February Favorite Things

I’m back on the bean.

The truth will set you free, they say, and the truth is tea is just not as good as coffee. I tried. I failed. I’ll drink a bit more Earl Grey tea, but coffee has my heart. I’m trying to limit the vanilla syrup and switch to honey. Again, not as good. But I’m sipping my way towards less sugar and more love for myself when I “slip up”… or sip up. I crack myself up.

Ahh February. Typically the weather is colder, we get more snow, and I’m sad because Christmas and my birthday are over. February means I’m in for the long haul towards Spring. It’s not my favorite month, but here are a few of my favorite things that can make the month more bearable.

  1. Felt Letter Boards

My friend got me a changeable letter board for my birthday and I am so excited! I am using it for a little fun this month. Send me your favorite beauty quote and I’ll capture it on my board and share it on Instagram. Then I’ll round up all the contributions for a special post at the end of the month. Leave a comment here or send your thoughts on beauty to 52beautifulthings at gmail dot com. Keep in mind, the phrase has to fit on a felt board.

Other future uses: Cocktail lists for parties. Positive vibes. Dinner Menus. Bible Verses. Love notes to Dylan or to myself.  Show your friends just how quippy you can be. It has retro charm and modern day potential.

2. Zucchini Noodles

Cutting out carbs seems sad. I love pasta. And potatoes. And carbs. Yet, I’m slowly pulling myself up on the Paleo bandwagon and trying to integrate healthier meals into the rotation. This Spiralizer will help. Come over for zoodles or maybe I’ll make you ribbons of butternut squash. The possibilities are endless.

Let this cookbook be our guide.

3.Groundhog Day

The old classic. I like it. It’s a reminder that we have choices in how we live our lives. That we can make changes, break out of routines, keep practicing until we get it right. Perhaps About Time captures these themes better, but one must pay homage to Bill Murray every February 2nd.

4. Air Plants

I kill plants. But Pinterest promises me all these plants need to live is air. They can pull the nutrients they need from the AIR. I just have to soak them in water once a week and their tangly arms and blooming flowers can grace glass bottles and hang from my book shelves with little effort. I got six for my birthday and I’m still placing them around my house. And ps, did you know you can buy PLANTS on Amazon? Of course you can.

5. RxBars

My new favorite protein bar. Again, a Paleo thing. But these protein bars have real ingredients, low sugar, and are tasty! I like the mint chocolate flavor. Dylan prefers peanut butter. I like that I feel full in the morning and there are no mystery ingredients. Throw one in your purse. Stick on in your husband’s work bag. Have a snack. Share the love.

November Favorite Things

Put that down! October is over. You can’t eat candy corn anymore. The window has passed. Ok, ok, you can finish the bag you have in your cupboard, but no more candy corn purchases. I’ve got a hard rule.

Unless its a candy corn dog toy. Like this one which I just bought for my dog. I mean come on. I’m a sucker, but it’s cute. So that’s my first Favorite Thing for November. Technically, still a purchase in October, but hey, maybe they are on sale now since Halloween has passed.

Here’s the rest of my list for the month. Enjoy!

2. The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact

I can’t stop thinking about this book. It’s brilliant. I wrote about my initial thoughts here and the book has inspired me. What moments am I working to create?

So worth a read.

3. Isle of Skye Board Game

We have a lot of complicated, interesting, and creative board games at our house. This is my husband’s latest purchase. If you like learning new games, thinking outside of the box, and the idea of taking over as a Scottish man, check it out.

4. Lollia In Love Shea Butter Handcreme

I’ve had this handcreme awhile, but I’m starting to realize not many other brands compare. Delightful scents that replace my need for perfume and soft hands. For a low maintenance beauty girl like me, this stuff is a win-win.

5. Gratitude

It’s that time of year. Growing up at Thanksgiving we always went around the table and had to share what we were thankful for that year. I still make my family do this and I’m starting to realize how rare it is to stop and say thanks. I’m encouraging you to make a list, write your thoughts in a journal, share what you are thankful for here.  In fact – if you send me a list of your top 5 things you are thankful for this year – I’ll post it on Thanksgiving!

Need more fun ideas to share your gratitude with loved ones around the Thanksgiving table? Pinterest has tons, but I liked this idea below.

Hey friends – yeah those coming over for Friendsgiving – I’m going to make you do this at my house. Use that Sharpie Permanent Marker on a white pumpkin.

Everyone, yes everyone, has something to be thankful for.

May this month be full of gratitude, good reads, good eats, and love.

I’ll share my list of my 2017 52 Thankfuls on Thanksgiving Day as well.

Past year’s lists are here:      2016            2015

Favorite Things – August

August is a big month at my house. My husband and my father-in-law celebrate their birthdays one day apart (well one day and 30 years apart) and the whole month turns into a celebration of Huey men. I’m excited to approach these milestones with them!

As I mix celebration with continued healing, I share this list of my favorite things.

Here are a few things that are worth a mention, a glance, or an impulse buy this month.

  1. The Story You Need to Tell: Writing to Heal from Trauma, Illness, or Loss by Sandra Marinella

I was given this beautiful book to review and I loved the way Sandra encourages writers of all experience levels to get their stories out and on a page. She walks you through various writing exercises, shares her personal story with cancer, and encourages readers that healing can be found by writing your truth. All sentiments I can get behind. I strongly recommend this book!

2. Essie nail polish

My days as Receptionist at the Natural Nail Care Clinic forever left an impression on me and my medicine cabinet. I am still loyal to Essie products developed for your natural nail. I am loving this new color that was part of the Spring 2017 season. Come on, make your fingers feel pretty!

3. Ansel Adams Artwork

We finally painted our room! Our new, fresh, green walls anxiously await some art work. I’m planning on hanging some work by Ansel Adams like the piece below. My dad loved this artist’s ability to capture nature and peace. Photography and memory – beautiful things.

4. Be Brave T Shirt

Living life authentically takes bravery, compassion, and self-love. I like this t-shirt because it reminds me to embrace all of these things. Wear your mantras. Why not? I promise the women’s styles are more flattering.

5. Sprinkles

Everything worth celebrating is worth celebrating with sprinkles. Let the month of birthdays begin!

PS. I tried searching for manly sprinkles – Amazon tells me this doesn’t exist.

Favorite Things – June

Cheers! We made it to June. While the official start of summer doesn’t roll around for a few more weeks, here are a few things that bring me delight as the days grow longer.

  1. Gold and Navy Blue Paper Drinking Straws

Smoothie season is here! Iced coffee season too! (although for me that’s an all year thing). Put a little pep in your glass and choose some fun straws to sip your favorite beverage.

2. Fun Express 12 Mini Pirate Rubber Ducks Duckie Ducky Party Favors Novelty (1 Dozen)

I went to a bar and they gave me a cocktail with a rubber ducky in it. Needless to say I was instantly won over. Check out my Instagram to find out which charming duck graced my booze. A fun idea for any summer get together or just because. Rubber ducks make you smile.

3. Asti Cinzano 750 ml

This was the lovely sparkling wine I reference in this post.

Order a bottle. Toast to being alive.

4. Jobe’s Tomato Fertilizer Spikes,

We put in our garden and I am anxiously awaiting little sprouts to come and grace the dirt with their faces. Hoping this unique, less messy solution to fertilizer will produce lots of fruit.

5. Mattel Blokus Game

I forgot how much I like this game. Play with friends, challenge your brain, get blocking.
